The lung organs of crab-eating monkeys are derived from basal cells of the epithelium of the airway (airway/bronchi), including the nasal cavity, trachea and bronchial epithelium.The lungs are the core organs of the respiratory system. The airway epithelium is composed of pseudo-coated ciliated columnar epithelium, which contains basal cells (stem cells), ciliated cells (ciliated cells), goblet cells (goblet cells) and club/secretory cells (club/secretory cells).Basal cells express markers such as P63 and KRT5, which are the main source of stem cells for regeneration after airway injury.In 2023, Jiang et al. established the airway organoid of crab-eating monkeys for the first time and evaluated its pharmacokinetic function.The lungs of non-human primates are highly similar to humans in anatomy (such as airway branching patterns) and cell composition, and are an important model for the study of respiratory diseases (including SARS-CoV-2 infection, asthma, and COPD).
